Volunteer Roles

Our volunteers are prepared to adapt to the unique challenges of working in a volunteer clinic setting.
If you do not come from a medical background, please do not be intimidated by the roles you see here. Many of our legacy volunteers come to the clinic as general volunteers, runners, helpers and ease into other roles. We want to be certain you understand that if you have a strong desire to serve this community, and you are a good fit, we will find a place for you or we will help train you for one of our volunteer positions. At Guerrero Clinic our primary focus is cataract surgery, offering life-changing procedures to restore vision and improve quality of life for our patients. We are seeking compassionate, skilled, and adaptable volunteers to join our all-volunteer team.

Volunteer Opthalmologist

Our volunteer opthalmologists exercise flexibility and adaptability to operate in resource-limited settings. They have an unwavering commitment to compassionate care for underserved populations. Our volunteer opthalmolgists can expect to see 

​

At Guerrero Clinic, our opthalmologists can expect to:

  • Perform cataract surgeries and other ophthalmologic procedures with precision and care.

  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of volunteers, including optometrists, nurses, and support staff.

  • Mentor medical students or other volunteers on ophthalmologic techniques when applicable.

Volunteer Optometrist

Optometrists at the clinic will have the unique opportunity to encounter and manage rare and complex cases that are uncommon in typical clinical settings. This position is ideal for professionals who are flexible, adaptable, and eager to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need. Our key objective is to find and schedule for surgery our patients with dense cataracts.

At Guerrero Clinic, our optometrists can expect to:

  • Conduct comprehensive eye exams to diagnose and manage a wide range of ocular conditions, including rare or advanced pathologies.

  • Collaborate with ophthalmologists to co-manage complex cases, such as advanced cataracts, corneal diseases, or retinal disorders.

  • Provide pre- and post-operative care for cataract surgery patients.

  • Educate patients on eye health, disease prevention, and proper use of prescribed medications.

Volunteer Scrub Tech/ SX Tech

As a volunteer scrub technician, you will play a crucial role in maintaining a sterile environment and ensuring the smooth operation of surgical procedures.

​

At Guerrero Clinic our Scrub Techs can expect to:

  • Prepare the operating room for surgical procedures by setting up equipment and supplies according to established protocols.

  • Maintain a sterile field during surgeries, handling instruments and equipment with precision.

  • Assist surgeons and other medical staff during procedures by providing necessary instruments and supplies in a timely manner.

  • Ensure compliance with infection control and safety protocols to minimize risks to patients and staff.

  • Collaborate with the surgical team to maintain an efficient workflow and optimize patient care.

  • Participate in pre- and post-operative cleaning and preparation of the operating room.

Translator and/or Scribe

Our Translator/Scribe  volunteers work closely with our optometrists, ensuring seamless communication between healthcare providers and patients. This translator role is ideal for someone who is fluent in both English and Spanish or working towards fluency. Our Scribe volunteers are detail-oriented, and enjoys working in a fast-paced environment.​ Scribes take dictation from their partnered optometrist.

At Guerrero Clinic our Translators and Scribes can expect to:

  • Translator: Translate diagnoses, care plans, and instructions from optometrists to patients, ensuring clear understanding of their treatment. Ask patients pertinent health questions to gather necessary information for their medical history and relay that to their optometrist and/or scribe. 

  • Scribe: Accurately fill out patient records and paperwork as dictated by the optometrist during consultations.

  • Coordinate the flow of patients into and out of the optometrist’s consultation room, ensuring efficient use of time.

  • Provide empathetic and culturally sensitive support to patients, addressing any concerns or questions they may have.

Optical Shop Volunteer

Our optical shop volunteers work directly with our volunteer Optician to ensure that the workflow through the optical shop is efficient and that we deliver quality prescription glasses to our patients. Our optical shop volunteers will work directly with our volunteer optician.

At Guerrero Clinic our optical shop volunteers can expect to:​

​​

  • Measure pupil distance (PD) and pull prescription lenses for a frame. 

  • Assist patients in selecting frames that fit their needs and preferences.

  • Work with an optician to cut and prepare lenses according to prescriptions, ensuring accuracy and quality.

  • Organize and maintain optical shop inventory, including frames, lenses, and other supplies.

  • Deliver completed frames to patients, ensuring they are satisfied with their eyeglasses.

Patient Flow Coordinator

The Patient Flow Coordinator (PFC) manages the efficient movement of patients through our clinic. This role is ideal for someone who is extroverted, enjoys taking charge, and thrives in fast-paced environments. It is not uncommon for the PFC to know exactly what is happening with most patients moving through the clinic.

At Guerrero Clinic the ideal Patient Flow Coordinator has:

  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to multitask effectively.

  • Fluency in Spanish is essential for effective communication with patients and local volunteers.

  • Ability to work well under pressure and manage stress in a fast-paced environment.

  • Leadership skills and a willingness to take charge are crucial for this role.

  • Commitment to providing compassionate care for underserved populations.

Volunteer Lab/Dispensing Optician

Our volunteer Lab and Dispensing Optician(s) will oversee the day-to-day operations of the optical shop, ensuring efficient workflow and high-quality service. We are in need of both optician types or a dynamic optician who can do both jobs and oversee optical shop volunteers.

​

At Guerrero Clinic our volunteer Opticians can expect to:

  • Supervise and train volunteers on intaking customers and managing patient flow.

  • Dispensing optician: Interpret prescriptions, measure pupil distance (PD), fit patients for a frame and pull prescription lenses for a frame, adjust frame fit, assist patients in selecting frames, verify vision and dispense eyewear. 

  • Lab Optician: Cut and prepare lenses according to prescriptions, edging, ensuring accuracy and quality.

  • Organize and maintain optical shop inventory, including frames, lenses, and other supplies.

  • Quality Control: Conduct quality checks on finished eyeglasses to ensure they meet our standards.

Volunteer Circulator

We are seek dedicated and detail-oriented Circulators to join our surgical team. As a Circulator, you will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of cataract surgeries by managing patient care and supporting the surgical team. This position is ideal for someone who is highly organized, proactive, and passionate about making a difference.

At Guerrero Clinic our Volunteer Circulators can expect to:

  • Assist with patient transfer from the pre-operative waiting area to the operating room

  • Verify patient identity, medical history, and consent forms.

  • Verify the patient's surgical procedure and lens calculation

  • Work with the scrub techs to ensure that all necessary supplies, instruments, and equipment are available and in working order before each procedure. To include moving instrumentation to and from sterilization between procedures. 

  • Ensure sterile fields are established and maintained.

  • Act as the intermediary between the surgical team and other clinic staff to facilitate communication and resolve any issues during surgery.

  • Monitor patient safety and comfort during procedures.

  • Provide additional instruments or supplies as needed by the surgical team.

  • Assist with patient transfer from the operating room to recovery areas.

  • Document surgical details accurately.

  • Work closely with scrub technicians, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other medical staff to ensure efficient workflow.

  • Maintain a clean and organized operating environment throughout the day.

Volunteer Sterilization Tech

Guerrero Clinic volunteer Sterilization Techs are detail-oriented and safety-conscious.  As a volunteer in this role, you will play a crucial part in ensuring that all medical instruments are properly sterilized, maintaining the highest standards of infection control and patient safety.

A Guerrero Clinic Volunteer Sterilization Tech can expect to:

  • Collect, sort, and prepare surgical instruments for autoclaving, ensuring they are properly packaged and labeled.

  • Operate the autoclave according to established protocols, monitoring temperature, pressure, and time to ensure effective sterilization.

  • Conduct quality checks on sterilized instruments to verify they meet our standards for cleanliness and safety.

  • Maintain accurate records of sterilized instruments and supplies, ensuring adequate stock levels for surgical procedures.

  • Perform routine maintenance on autoclave equipment and troubleshoot any issues that arise during operation.

  • Work closely with surgical staff to ensure timely availability of sterilized instruments, facilitating efficient workflow.

Volunteer Dental Assistant

Guerrero Clinic is always in need of volunteer dentistal assistants. As a volunteer dental assistant, you play a vital role in helping our dentists deliver preventive and restorative treatments, including extractions and simple dental procedures. 

​

A Volunteer Dental Assistant can expect to:

  • Assist our volunteer dentists with performing patient exams, x-rays, photos, and other necessary assisting functions as needed. 

  • Assist the dentists by ensuring all tools are available, ready and clean for service.

  • Sterilize the equipment, tools and work areas, learn or be familiar with auto-clave functions and tool sterilization.

  • Assist the dentists in the performance of routine dental work, provide suction when necessary and other as needed assistance.

Volunteer Dentist

Guerrero Clinic is always in need of volunteer dentists. As a volunteer dentist, you play a vital role in delivering preventive and restorative treatments, including extractions and simple dental procedures. 

​

A Guerrero Clinic Volunteer dentist can expect to:

  • Perform Patient Exams and Diagnoses: Conduct thorough dental exams, taking necessary X-Rays and pictures, to diagnose and identify necessary treatments.

  • Perform Extractions and Restorative Care: Perform extractions, fillings, cleanings, and other simple restorative procedures as needed.

  • Work with dental assistants to manage patient flow and ensure efficient clinic operations.

  • Liaise with dental assistants and other volunteers to ensure seamless communication and effective patient care providing referral services for treatments not available at the clinic.

General Volunteer

Guerrero Clinic is always in need of general volunteers to help with "behind the scene" clinic operations. 

​

A Guerrero Clinic General Volunteer can expect to:

  • Help administrative staff and clinic leadership with tasks that "pop up." 

  • Provide runner services as necessary

  • If possible and needed, drive volunteers to and from the clinic

  • Help with breakfast duties and other general housekeeping tasks.

  • Be flexible and take on jobs that are needed at anytime

  • Have A LOT of fun with patients and the team

  • Run around and make people smile.
